Regular ferries, with journey times of less than an hour, depart
from Central to several outlying islands. On Cheung Chau or
Peng Chau, narrow langes take you past old village houses, temples
and small shops, then to waterfront restaurants serving fresh fish
and locally grown vegetables. There are no cars, only an island
tranquility that has changed little over generations.
Lantau, larger than Hong Kong island but with a population of
only around 26,000, has country trails, deserted beaches and the
largest outdoor, seated, bronze Buddha in the world.
